Rest In Pieces: Parting Words to The Awesome (and Awful) Rides We Lost in the 2010s

Friends, family, we are gathered here today to close a chapter; to say our last goodbyes; to send a decade of attractions to the big theme park in the sky. In the 2010s, we bid adieu to no less than 20 once-ambitious attractions. Some went out in a blaze of glory; others, a wimpering spark of a doomed fire.

Yet for each of these 20 closed attractions – the good, bad, and downright ugly – their closures marked the end of memory-making for some. Indeed, your children or your grandchildren may never see these attractions in person, and unlike the 13 “Endangered” Rides We Worry May Not Survive the 2020s, for some of these attractions, their endings were a total shock. For others, that may be for the best… but in any case, here are our last goodbyes to 20 attractions we lost in the 2010s, in order of closure.

WESTCOT: Inside The Abandoned Park Plans That Would’ve Changed Disneyland Forever

“To all who come to this place of possibility… welcome. Possibilityland is your land…” Or at least, it almost was! Over the years, we’ve taken astounding trips into our  Possibilityland  series to explore the could-be classics that have been dreamed of but never built… 

Maybe you’ve ridden along with us through the Enchanted Snow Palace long before Elsa reigned, the wild Western River Expedition that would’ve been Magic Kingdom’s mainstay, or the perilous peaks of never-built Disney “mountains.” Along the way, we’ve visited entirely lost lands like the inventive Discovery Bay, the wacky Muppet Studios, or the “timeless tomorrow” of Tomorrowland 2055. We’ve even explored “alternate reality” versions of Disneyland Park, Magic Kingdom, and Epcot with their unbuilt attractions in-tact!

But today’s trip into Possibilityland may be the most epic yet: the true tale of the ambitious, alternate-reality, never-built Disneyland Resort and its lost theme park, WESTCOT Center. One of the most elaborate and expensive projects ever announced, Westcot was born and died all in the span of a decade, during which time this officially-greenlit project promised to transform Walt’s tiny, original Disneyland into a multi-day destination on par with its younger Floridian sister.

Right Rides, Wrong Place: 8 Attractions That Don’t Make Sense in the Lands They’re In

“Disneyland will never be complete, so long as there is imagination left in the world.” How many times have you heard that quote as a reason for closing a classic or adding an attraction somewhere that doesn’t quite make sense? The truth is, Disney Parks are organic places! For better or worse, things will always be changing; rides will always be swapping in and out; if you don’t like change, Disney Parks fandom may not be for you!

But sometimes in Disney’s rush to incorporate new attractions, add capacity, or infuse hot properties fast, we might end up with some rides that are simply in the wrong places! For better or worse, theme parks can’t grow forever. At some parks, physical space is the limit, with little room to expand outward. At others, designers are boxed in by existing architecture. Sometimes, guests legs simply can’t take another lap or a new land without buckling.

Whether limited by roads, rivers, rides, or guests’ energy reserves, opportunities for growth are always at a premium for Disney Parks. Below, we’ve taken a look at the six Disney Parks in the U.S. from above to highlight their opportunities for expansion.
