Journey Into YOUR Imagination: Imagineering’s Unimaginative Reimagining of “Imagination!”

One little spark of inspiration is at the heart of all creation. A dream can be a dream-come-true with just that spark from me and you! Alight with wonder, these words were a celebration of optimism, creativity, and joy when they were sung by heroes of EPCOT Center’s early years – the enigmatic Dreamfinder and his imaginative companion, Figment. But when the very creativity this EPCOT classic set out to inspire fell by the wayside, something truly disastrous emerged…

Today, we want to dive deep into the story of a ride that was already loved by a generation and celebrated as a living example of Imagineering’s best… until Disney (literally) tore out its character resulting in one of the most despised and (thankfully) short-lived Disney attractions ever.

It can only be the story behind Epcot’s depressingly unimaginitive Journey into Your Imagination. Although it was only open for two years, the infamy of this debilitating disaster has made it a laughing stock, even for those who never had the chance to see it in person. Short-lived, short-sighted, and plain-old shortened, this dark ride proved to be more of a death than a rebirth.

History in Motion Part I: How EPCOT’s Legendary World of Motion Taught a Generation That “It’s Fun to be Free”

When EPCOT Center opened on October 1, 1982, it was a sincere display of futurism, innovation, corporate power, and industry. Because in hindsight it also has an inordinate amount of closed classics, you’ve heard us examine the park’s ambitious and brave concept in Lost Legends features telling the in-depth stories of Journey into Imagination, Horizons, Maelstrom, Soarin’, and Body Wars – just a small sampling of the stunning features preserved in our Lost Legends collection.

But there is perhaps no Lost Legend more aligned to the park’s grand, educational, World’s Fair roots; more a memorial to Walt Disney’s own fascinations; more in tune with EPCOT Center’s celebration of human innovation than World of Motion.

Often overlooked in Epcot’s history of bulldozed classics, this incredible, epically sized dark ride through the history of transportation was no less impressive or important than Universe of Energy or Spaceship Earth. In fact, its story is of a one-of-a-kind, whimsical, and wondrous Disney dark ride created by famed animators packed with as many creative gags and effects as the Haunted Mansion.

UNIVERSE OF ENERGY: A Journey to the Past and the Extinction of the Last EPCOT Center Classic

The power’s been cut, and another EPCOT Center classic has seen its last days. Our Lost Legends series was developed for just such occasions, and for years now we’ve been adding unabridged entries to this growing library, chronicling the in-depth histories of forgotten fan favorites.

We’ve toured the streets of London on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, narrowly escaped the bite of JAWS, explored how Disney’s cancelled Beastly Kingdom became Universal Orlando’s Lost Continent, gotten a taste of EPCOT Center’s “dinner” show Kitchen Kabaret, dissected the history of Disneyland Paris’ one-of-a-kind Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune, and so many more.

Today, we sadly induct another classic into our Lost Legends series: perhaps the most epically-sized dark ride Disney ever designed: Universe of Energy. Oversized, educational, and an astounding 45-minutes, this gargantuan journey into the past was a star of Future World and an icon of EPCOT Center’s early years. Today, we’ll dive into the history of the concept and watch its evolution over three and a half decades, then take a cautious look at what’s to come when Epcot changes forever… Ready?

History in Motion Part II: How the Original TEST TRACK Changed Epcot Forever

From the idling speed of prehistoric times to the white-knuckle thrills of tomorrow, Epcot’s transportation pavilion has always celebrated humanity’s desire to move farther, faster. And today, we accelerate from 0 – 65 as we explore the second life of the transportation pavilion as it became home to fastest ride Walt Disney World has ever hosted.

Technologically groundbreaking, cutting-edge, and game-changing, in 1999 Epcot welcomed a new ride that would change the park forever. Kicking off a new philosophy of industrious thrills, TEST TRACK signaled a change in the wind; a falling domino that – for better or worse – redefined Epcot for a new generation and a New Millennium.

But the story behind this adored ride isn’t a drive in the park. Plagued by frazzled technologies that lead to years of disastrous delays, the true story of Test Track’s opening is a testament to Disney’s perseverance. And the story of its closure is one of forward-thinking sponsorship and adaptability. The ride you see today is so different from the 1999 original, we consider it a new installation altogether. Today, we’ll dissect the development of Test Track (which traces its roots to the 1970s) and see what riders experienced on this lost 1999 thrill ride. Then, we’ll explore what replaced it and why.

And before we head off, remember that you can unlock rare concept art and audio streams in this story, access over 100 Extra Features, and recieve an annual Membership card and postcard art set in the mail by supporting this clickbait-free, in-depth, ad-free theme park storytelling site for as little as $2 / month! THE LIVING SEAS: The Nautical Tale of EPCOT’s Undersea Pavilion from Concept to Clown Fish

“Hydrolator number 2, descending to SeaBase Alpha. Docking port cleared. SeaBase Alpha, Hydrolator on approach…”

At Epcot, the only thing that seems to stay the same is change. That’s why we’re back at Walt Disney World’s infamous second gate for yet another entry in our ever-growing Lost Legends collection to capture a fan-favorite closed classic for a new generation of Disney Parks guests. And of course, we’ve taken our heartbreaking tour of Future World in in-depth features before, from Journey into Imagination to Universe of EnergyWorld of Motion to Body Wars; even the original Test TrackSoarin’, and so many more. But today, our tour of a lost EPCOT Center classic takes us to the deepest trenches of the ocean.

The Living Seas embodied everything that EPCOT Center was about – it was a gargantuan, spectacular, larger-than-life attraction rooted in reality that was meant to inform, inspire, educate, and leave guests caring just a little more about the real-life wonders of the world around them.

But you may be surprised what EPCOT’s aquatic pavilion was supposed to look like. Today, we’ll dive deep into the sunken story of The Living Seas to see how Poseidon – then, King Triton – was earmarked to star in this Future World show, and how a little lost clownfish beat them both… The history of the Living Seas may go deeper than you ever imagined. Step on board and let’s set foot in this pavilion as it existed years ago…

Kitchen Kabaret: All The “Nutrition Facts” on EPCOT Center’s Animatronic “Dinner Shows” of Yesteryear

“Oh dear… It’s time for another meal…”

If you’ve ever felt the meal time blues, then you may have been one of the generation of Disney World fans whose view of the kitchen was forever changed by Kitchen Kabaret, an EPCOT Center original. Prepared by Kraft Foods and served up by Disney Imagineers, this incomparable animatronic “dinner” show gave visitors a musical lesson on the “four basic food groups” and how to chase those meal time blues away!

HORIZONS: A Look Back at EPCOT’s Imagineering Masterpiece and its Glimpse into the 21st Century

UNDER REFURBISHMENT! You know I love to keep things fresh around here, and as a result, this feature is currently under construction! As I finish up edits over the next few days, you may encounter outdated information, repeated or disjointed sections, or “past perspectives” that refer to current events in the future tense. If you don’t mind sifting through some rough edges, I think you’ll still enjoy it… and check back soon for a fully refurbished story!

Horizons 1 is now departing. Our final destination today: the twenty-first century.

For Walt Disney Imagineering, it was a destination a long time coming: the future. Since the cast of designers who would create Disney’s theme parks was formed in 1952, great effort has been spent imagining (and then re-imagining) what tomorrow could bring… And more often than not, Imagineering’s visions of tomorrow have been surprisingly prescient!

But all glimpses into the future conjured by Disney’s designers paled in comparison to the ride that – for many fans of classic Imagineering – reset the standard and the timeline. For fans of the original EPCOT Center and the heady, intellectual, reflective, and progressive values it stood for, time is measured before and after HORIZONS.

Today, we’ll glimpse the future as envisioned by EPCOT Center on a round-trip, time-traveling journey that starts in the past. Even today – long gone from park maps – it ranks among the pantheon of Disney Parks’ most ambitious, elaborate, and massively-scaled E-Tickets ever created.

But even more, Horizons was a grand, ambitious landmark of what EPCOT could be and what Imagineering could do; a project reflecting the greatest intuitions and impressions of a graduating class of designers passing their skills on to the 21st century. And in the minds of many thematic design aficionados, it was as close to a masterpiece as Disney’s ever been, standing alongside Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones Adventure, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

What made Horizons a ride that’s transcended into the upper echelons of Imagineering’s most beloved projects? To glimpse the future as envisioned by EPCOT Center on a round-trip, time-traveling journey, we’ve got to start in the past…

Captain EO: Inside the $17 Million Michael Jackson Music Video that Changed Disney World Forever

Legend. That’s not a title to be thrown around lightly. In our time, true legends are few and far between. Legends defy expectations; they reshape pop culture; they become immortal icons remembered forever, their stories passed down through time. And that’s exactly what we’re here for.

As you know, Park Lore exists to chronicle the stories of industry legends, from Test Track to Adventure Thru Inner Space; Maelstrom to  JAWS; Snow White’s Scary Adventures to If You Had Wings. These are the stories that define eras of Imagineering. But even still, it’s rare for an Imagineering legend and a pop culture legend to collide… Today, our series heads to the stars for one of our most spectacular entries yet.

Captain EO was “here to change the world…” and he changed Disney World along with it. Michael Jackson’s biggest music video ever was unprecedented; an unimaginable collaboration of stars created specifically to reinvigorate Disney Parks when all hope seemed lost. In so doing, EO set the stage for a revolution, redefining Disney’s relationship with pop culture, film, and celebrity. Today, we’ll look behind-the-scenes of this industry-altering film and see exactly how – and why – it came to be.

BODY WARS: An “Inside” Look at EPCOT’s Abandoned, Pulse-Pounding Voyage Through the Human Body

Over the past few years, we’ve been working hard to build a library of Lost Legends, telling the in-depth behind-the-scenes stories of beloved-and-lost rides from around the globe. We’ve survived Disney’s scariest attraction ever, Alien Encounter; ventured 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to revisit the sunken Magic Kingdom classic; taken flight to relive the lost experience of Soarin’; toured the skies of Walt’s Tomorrowland aboard The Peoplemover; we’ve even merrily raced along to Nowhere in Particular aboard Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Across the site, keep your eye out for links to other Lost Legends, or set course for your favorite.

But today, we return to what may be the international capital of closed classics: EPCOT. It seems that rides at this uniquely ambitious park are doomed from the start, and a number of our Lost Legends resided here once upon a time. Today’s entry earned its place in Disney Parks’ history books by being the first thrill ride at EPCOT; a unique fusion of education and entertainment in a shuttered pavilion.

This can only be the story of BODY WARS, the would-be classic that nauseated a generation en route to an unfortunate and unusual closure. Even today – a decade after its closure – Body Wars is sealed away behind closed doors, rusting and awaiting its own demolition. In today’s in-depth entry, we’ll explore the history of the doomed Wonders of Life pavilion, the experience of its headlining thrill ride, and what became of it. Brace yourself, because this ride is not for the feint of heart… or stomach.

“One Little Spark”: How Epcot’s Journey into Imagination Inspired a Generation

EPCOT is one of a kind. For Disney World fans, there’s no park as marked by nostalgia, change, promise, and loss. With hopes to “instill a new sense of belief and pride in man’s ability to shape a world that offers hope to people everywhere,” EPCOT today is a park defined by reinvention. And yet, among its staggering collection of closed classics, there’s one particular attraction that stands out… Alight with the musical creativity, this ride inspired a generation with a simple reminder:

“One little spark of inspiration is at the heart of all creation! Right at the start of everything that’s new, one still spark lights up for you!”

Journey into Imagination is long gone. That means that a generation of Disney Parks fans never had the chance to take flight with Dreamfinder and Figment, or to sail through realms of art and science on a quest for “sparks.” But that’s where our library of Lost Legends comes in… Today, we’ll soar through the clouds as we preserve this timeless experience for good, crystalizing the creation of this spectacular closed classic, our memories (and yours!) of the experience on board, and its unfortunate history since…

Ready to set sail for the Dreamport?
